The Central Library, Cape Town, and the Open Book Festival staged an attempt at a Guinness World Record at the library in Cape Town yesterday.  The current record of 2, 131 books, held by Seattle Public Library in the World’s longest book domino chain record, was smashed (albeit still to be verified) on only the 2nd attempt when the team managed to knock down an astounding 2, 586 books in one domino chain.

Supported by members of the public, authors from the Open Book Festival, library and festival workers, and media; the atmosphere at the library when the last book (aptly titled The Domino Effect), toppled over, was electric.  Hugs, kisses and even tears of joy were seen, not unsurprising considering the weeks and months of work that has gone into pulling this off.

“The record verification process still takes 8 – 12 weeks but we’re confident that the record is ours”, says Mervyn Sloman, Open Book Festival Director.

The Open Book Festival 2013 takes place from Saturday September 7 – Wednesday September 11. For more information visit www.openbookfestival.co.za.  Book for all events via Webtickets (www.webtickets.co.za).
