On Monday morning Open Book Festival (OBF), in collaboration with Cape Town Central Library, launched Pulp Fiction 3 and the renovated librarywith an a-MAZE-ing installation. The maze, which consists of 80 000 books and over 150 titles, is built of books that would otherwise have been pulped.

The maze is on display at the Cape Town Central Library for the month of March. Book lovers and friends are invited to come find their way through the maze as well as experience that reading and books can be used as a form of expression and creativity.

On 26 March 2014, the installation will be taken down and the public, librarians, children, teachers, book worms and those learning to read are all encouraged to come and collect as many books as they would like. These books can be used to share, donate or just simply enjoy. There’s 80 000 books so the whole of Cape Town can join in.

Frankie Murrey, event orgainser, adds: “Open Book Festival saw the opportunity to once again spread the love of reading with South Africa and instead of having 80 000 books pulped we decided to showcase them creatively and then share these books with those would make better use of them. We would like to thank Penguin Books SA for their generous donation.”

About Open Book Festival

Open Book Cape Town is an annual literary festival, the first of which happened in 2011. Dates for Open Book 2013 are 7 – 11 September. The hubs will once again be the Fugard Theatre and much-loved indie bookshop, The Book Lounge.

When Mervyn Sloman and Ben Williams started talking about creating a festival, they had in mind around 60 literary events over 5 days featuring about 15 top international as well as some of the best South Africans writing today. Due to the incredible support Open Book received, that quickly grew into a festival that now includes over 100 events, featuring over 100 authors.
